Mucuna

Mucuna pruriens -- also known as cowhage seed or by its scientific name, Dolichos pruriens -- is an herbal remedy that has been used to treat a variety of mental and physical complaints for more than 4,000 years in Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurveda is the traditional Indian medical system, based on plant and herbal medicines, chakra treatment and natural healing. Mucuna pruriens is a native tropical plant whose beans are used as a dietary supplement in whole form or ground into powder for use in capsule form. It is largely used to treat Parkinson's disease. The main benefit of Mucuna pruriens is that the beans contain naturally occurring L-dopa, which is a precursor to the brain chemical dopamine.

St. John's wort is one of the most commonly purchased herbal products in the United States.

In recent years, St. John' s wort has been studied extensively as a treatment for depression. Most studies show that St. John's wort may help treat mild-to-moderate depression, and has fewer side effects than most other prescription antidepressants. But it interacts with a number of medications, so it should be taken only under the guidance of a health care provider.

Cool down with some watermelon soup!!!

WATERMELON SOUP

- 5 C watermelon, seeded and cubed
- 2 C mango, peeled and diced
- 1/4 C lime juice
- 3 TB fresh mint, chopped
- 1TB fresh ginger, minced
- 1TB honey
- 1/8 tsp ground cardamom

Place 3 1/2 c watermelon and 1 c mango in a food processor and blend until smooth. Dice up the remaining 1 1/2 cups watermelon and 1 c mango into tiny pieces and add to the puree. In a small, separate bowl, combine the lime juice, mint, ginger, honey and cardamom. Add this to the previous mixture and stir well. Chill and serve.

CUCUMBER COOLER

JUICE
- 1 tomato

Pour juice into ice cube tray, and freeze.

JUICE
- 1 cucumber
- 2 stalks celery

Pour juice into tall glass, add tomato cubes, and garnish with a sprig of parsley.
