Our sold out cooking class last Friday September 23 was amazing.
We had a special guest.
A guest who smells really good.A guest who makes you feel better instantly.
A guest who can be used for so many things.
The guests name was: Essential Oil! :)
What are Essential Oils?
An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils, contrary to the use of the word "oil" are not really oily-feeling at all. Most essential oils are clear, but some oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color.
Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from. Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way.
How do I use Essential Oils?
Essential Oils can be used topically, internally, and aromatically through inhaling and diffusing.
We use Young Living Essential Oils which are 100% Therapeutic Grade. When you use oils as a dietary supplement or to infuse food with, you have to use a brand that you can trust! This is the most important step when starting to use oils in your life.
Why use Essential Oils?
Besides being a dietary supplement they can also help you to uplift your spirit, keep you calm, help combat stress, first aid etc.
They can be used as an all natural perfume.
And back to our class topic, they are amazing to be used in the kitchen.
How to use Essential Oil in the Kitchen?
If you have a recipe that calls for the zest and or juice of orange, add a few drops of orange essential oil to it to intensify the flavor and bring it onto another level. Do the same with dried fruits and herbs.
Add the oils towards the end, unless the oils are very strong (e.g oregano, rosemary, basil) those you might want to simmer for a bit, so the heat can evaporate them.
Start slow! A drop goes a long way, and is often already too much.
You can use a toothpick. Simply tip it into your chosen oil and swirl it into your sauce, dip or puree, or any other liquid you use.
Add the oil into a fatty base and then mix it with the non liquids.
For example in baking I would add the oil to the nut milk or any fatty liquid I’m using, and then mix it with my dry ingredients.
Also keep in mind that flavors can become stronger. For example if you marinate something, or you will realize this when you eat the leftovers the next day.
If you would like to smell on an essential oil then come by the store and sniff on our samples.
If you would like to learn more about essential oils, then safe the date for our upcoming class on Tuesday October 4.
